Accessible Design

Universal Design: The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. These modifications are usually unnoticeable.

Visitable Design: Refers to a minimum level of accessibility that will allow a person using a wheelchair basic access to the ground floor of a home without the need of an attendant or special equipment.

Adaptable Design: Design concept that addresses problems of individual differences and changes in capability over time (for example, doors that can be made wider and walls that can be moved).

Accessible Design: Used in public spaces to address the needs of an individual who has a disability. This type of design must adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Specialized Design: Incorporation of features or assistive technologies that work for a specific individual’s needs, and not necessarily for anyone else.
