Zero Energy Homes

Zero Energy Homes combine energy efficient construction techniques with renewable energy systems to produce equal the amount of energy used annually by the home. Zero energy is interpreted at four different levels:

Mechanical Zero Energy – heating and cooling energy are offset by conservation and a small renewable package (solar thermal). See an example of mechanical zero energy that we have constructed here.

Site Zero Energy – heating and cooling energy + all other energy needs are offset by increased conservation and both photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. See an example of site zero energy that we will be constructing here.

Site Carbon Neutral Zero Energy – heating and cooling energy + all other energy needs + energy lost through distribution are offset by considerable conservation and significant photovoltaic and solar thermal energy storage and banking. See and example of site carbon neutral zero energy that we have constructed here.

Carbon Neutral Zero Energy – heating and cooling energy + all other energy needs + energy lost through distribution + embodied energy in building materials and transportation to the site are offset with an intense focus on carbon pollution reduction through the use of natural and local products.

Zero energy homes can be achieved through both new construction and retrofitting existing homes. Learn more about zero energy homes here.
